Metropolis is created by Copenhagen International Theatre in collaboration with a vast number of Danish and international partners, artists, funders and sponsors.
Copenhagen International Theatre has been the primary force behind international performing arts in Denmark for almost 30 years. By applying our huge international network and a close collaboration with local institutions and partners our organisation has produced more than 50 international festivals, seminars etc. presenting more than 1500 invited artists, ensembles and companies.
From the very beginning Copenhagen International Theatre has presented the newest movements in dance, innovative artistic expressions, the renewal of traditional theatre and completely new genres and trends emerging in performing arts in Denmark. Alive, original, limitless and essential are words that have motivated all our programming. Fundamentally offering performing arts to inspire and excite the audience and professional artistic circles in Denmark and the Nordic countries.
Copenhagen International Theatre was established in 1979 as a non-profit cultural organisation. Founder Trevor Davies and program coordinator Katrien Verwilt are co-directing.
Founder of Copenhagen International Theatre and trained as a city planner. Previously he was the general secretary of the Århus Festival and Copenhagen City of Culture 96 and co-founder of Danish Centre for Culture and Development (DCCD).
has a MA in Roman Philology and Theatre Studies from universities in Leuven (Belgium), Bologna (Italy) and Århus, before she began her training with the Chaos Pilots. She was headhunted to join the City of Culture96 team, as international secretary and has been with Copenhagen International Theatre on a permanent basis since 1998.
The board of Copenhagen International Theatre consist of chairperson Erik Agergaard (Architect, Chair of Dansescenen and more), Bjørn Lense Møller (Former Chair of the Theatre Council and Head of the Radio Theatre), Gitte Spies (Lawyer), Katrine Winkelhorn (Cultural Consultant), Peter Elsass (Psychologist/ Anthropologist), Dorte Skot-Hansen (Mag.Art., Manager of Centre for Culture Political Studies), Steen Cold (Former Manager), Katinka Hauxner (Cand.scient.pol.) and Mette Høxbro (Library Director).
Copenhagen International Theatre is primarily funded by the Danish Arts Agency and the City of Copenhagen. Individual festivals and programmes are supported by national and international funds and partners.
Previous festivals include the legendary Festivals of Fools, Japan on Stage, The British are Coming, Dancin' City, Images of Africa, Sommerscene, Dancin' World, Sommerscene and other major festivals, seminars and projects.
In 2007 Copenhagen International Theatre launched a new biennale, Metropolis, running from 2007 to 2017, presenting festivals in odd years and major laboratories and workshops in even years.
Concurrently Copenhagen International Theatre participates actively in establishing contemporary circus as a performing arts genre in Denmark by presenting contemporary Circus festivals, seminars and workshops.
