METROPOLIS is a festival and a laboratory for the development of the creative city. With Metropolis, Copenhagen International Theatre exits the theatre and enters the city to create art, life and debate. The objective is once again to break the established notions of the art, and in particular the traditional image of the performing arts.
METROPOLIS 2007-17 was launched in 2007, and over a decade Copenhagen International Theatre will present theatre-based METROPOLIS experiences in city streets – far from traditional street performances – but artistic adaptations of significant buildings, squares and roads. These experiences include the staging of everyday life, installations in abandoned buildings, artists working with local groups in creative inner city processes, art experiences in temporary and mobile venues and excursions to the parameters of the city. The city becomes the frame, the object and subject, all at once.
METROPOLIS is a biannual festival, alternating with the festival in odd years and the laboratory in even years. In June 2010 the Metropolis Laboratory was held in a building on the site of the old Carlsberg Brewery. The laboratory featured 35 presentations of projects, visions, ideas and theories with basis in the creative city and art in the public domain. The laboratory points towards the festival and some of the artistic projects will be a direct result of the laboratory.
The next Metropolis Festival will take place in August 2011. Keep an eye on http://www.cph-metropolis.dk/, where the festival programme will be published in the spring of 2011.
